John Aguilar

Professor Emeritus of Anthropology

john_aguilar_5

John Aguilar began his study of painting in the mid-fifties at the Chouinard School (Los Angeles) and the Academy of San Carlos (Mexico City). But his professional career has been as a social anthropologist, working 22 years in the Department of Anthropology at Arizona State University. Upon retirement in 1999, he resumed his life as a full-time painter. His present work reflects some forms of the abstract expressionism that dominated the American art world of the fifties. Aguilar’s work ranges from semi-abstract (or quasi-figurative) to non-objective (or completely abstract) paintings. His general approach to working with colors, lines, shapes and compositional elements gives free rein to unconscious and semi-conscious expressions.
